One of the biggest questions I get as a Toledo senior photographer is:
“What should I wear for senior pictures?”
And honestly? This can make or break how confident you feel during your session.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and guidance, you can choose outfits that feel like you and photograph beautifully.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
The biggest mistake I see seniors make is waiting too long to plan their outfits.
When that happens, you end up:
- scrambling to find something that works
- dealing with shipping delays
- settling for outfits you don’t LOVE
I always recommend:
- start planning outfits at least 1 month before your session
- have your final outfits picked 2 weeks in advance
This gives you time to:
✔ try everything on
✔ make adjustments or hemming
✔ swap anything that doesn’t feel right
How Many Outfits Should You Bring?
This depends on the session you choose.
- Signature + Ultimate Sessions → up to 4 outfits
- Classic & Mini Session → one outfit
If you’re choosing just one outfit, this is your moment to pick something that makes you feel AMAZING.
Something that makes you think, “Yep… this is me.”
What Types of Outfits Photograph Best?
My style is bright, joyful, and natural, so I always love outfits that reflect that.
Some of my favorite looks:
- long, flowy dresses (see inspo from recent session here!)
- cute jeans + t-shirt outfits
- anything that feels effortless and comfortable
The key is movement + personality.
If you feel good in it, it will show in your photos.
Best Colors for Senior Photos
Color makes a HUGE difference in your photos.
I always recommend:
- light, bright colors
- pastels
- jewel tones
- fun pops of color
And don’t underestimate a classic white dress; it’s timeless for a reason.
What to avoid:
- too many dark colors in one outfit
- heavy tones that can feel dull or weigh down the image
Match Your Outfit to Your Location
Your outfit should complement your location.
Here’s a simple guide:
- 🌿 Nature / parks → flowy dresses, soft colors
- 🌆 Downtown / urban → jeans, cute tops, trendier looks
- 🌊 Beach → long dresses, movement, lighter fabrics
This helps your entire gallery feel cohesive and intentional.
I’m Here to Help You Choose
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
I always offer help with outfit planning, whether that’s:
- messaging me outfit options
- sending try-on photos
- hopping on a quick 15-minute Zoom call
I’ll always give honest feedback on what will photograph best.
But most importantly: you should feel confident in what you’re wearing
That matters more than anything.
Don’t Forget the Details (Parents — This One’s For You)
Outfits go beyond just the main pieces.
Make sure you’re thinking about:
- shoes
- undergarments (nothing showing through)
- accessories
- backup options
I always recommend packing a “go bag” the morning of your session with:
✔ extra shoes
✔ undergarments
✔ accessories
This keeps everything stress-free and organized.
Confidence Is Everything
The best outfit is one that feels like YOU. Don’t try to force a look that doesn’t match your personality. If it feels off, it will look off. If it feels right, it will show in every photo.
If you’re unsure about your outfit… don’t be afraid to pivot. If something doesn’t feel right, keep looking. When you find the outfit you love, you’ll know.
